Zafarraya

zafarraya passZaffaraya is a pretty village with about 2.500 inhabitants and relies mainly on the market garden produce which is grown all around the village. Situated north east of Malaga, inland from the Costa Del Sol in the heart of Andalucia Spain, the village consists of the old town with it´s ruined church and whitewashed houses, and new development, still whitewashed but with a more modern feeling. There are pretty squares where you can sit and watch the world go by, tapas bars, shops, banks etc. If you want a feeling of the real Spain, you will find it here in Zafarraya. It is not on the 'tourist trail' but the people are warm and friendly and the old town, one of the true 'white villages' is well worth a visit.

Zafarraya lies at the foot of the north face of the Sierra Tejeda Mountains and nestles in an abundance of green pastures and vineyards, with pine forests climbing the side of the mountains to the craggy heights that are covered with a blanket of snow in the winter. Because of its proximity to the coast and fine agricultural land Zafarraya has been populated since prehistoric times and has many historic remains.

An interesting feature of the nearby countryside is an enourmous U-shaped gap in the mountains, known as El Boquete de Zafarraya (The Zafarraya Pass). A road runs through the gap linking the Provinces of Malaga and Granada. This pass has, since time immemorial, played a key role in the history of the settlers of the adjacent territories; in fact, archaeological excavations carried out in 1983 point to human presence in the area over 30,000 years ago: remains were discovered of the jawbone of a male Homo Sapiens -better known as Neanderthal Man- from the Le Moustier era of the mid Palaeolithic period. Other prehistoric remains found near El Boquete de Zafarraya are: the caves of Cueva de los Guaicos and Abrigo de El Espino, both of which belong to the Neolithic period, and evidence of a Bronze Age settlement in the 2nd century A.D. at Cerro de La Negreta.
